Summary
Who knows best whether a hospital or clinic is truly welcoming for transgender persons? The people who use it. In 2023, Basera Samajik Sansthan was a partner in the Trans COMP Community-Based Monitoring (CBM) Tool Pilot – Phase 2, led by the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) in four countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
The Trans COMP tool was designed by and for trans people. It checks whether health services are trans-competent – respectful, affordable, easy to reach and of good quality – including HIV care, gender-affirming care and hormones, and sexual and reproductive health services.
How the pilot worked
- A Basera Focal Point coordinated the work in Delhi NCR together with the APTN team
- Health services in the area were mapped and local stakeholders were informed
- Trained community Data Gatherers visited health services and filled a Trans COMP scorecard after each visit
- The scorecards were analysed and the findings were shared with service providers and stakeholders
What we found
- Working well: many people were on HIV treatment, and welfare cases were being followed up actively
- Needing change: too little mental health support, difficulty getting ID documents, and STI care that was not the same everywhere
We shared these findings with local health authorities to push for better referrals and fewer barriers. The pilot showed that community-led monitoring works on the ground, and we hope to take it to more districts.
